*Calypso in _Pirates of the Caribbean*_
*Who is Calypso?*
1. *Goddess of the Sea* – The most powerful being in the entire ocean. Mistress of storms and waves.
2. *Davy Jones’s Lover* – He loved her so much he cut out his own heart for her. But she betrayed him.
3. *Tia Dalma* – Through the second and third movies, she was hiding in the form of the witchy gypsy woman covered in beads, _Tia Dalma_ 🤍
4. *The Reason for Davy Jones’s Curse* – When the Brethren Court trapped her in a human body, he turned into the tentacle-faced monster because her heart died.
*The Badass Moment:*
When they freed her in the third movie, _At World’s End_… she grew to the size of a ship, screamed _“Mali’s! Traitor!”_, and unleashed a whirlpool that swallowed anything in its path to show them the ocean’s wrath when it’s caged.
*Her Philosophy:* She _is_ the sea. Wild, unpredictable, owned by no one. Cage her… and she’ll drown you.
*Why Did They Cage Her, Philosopher?*
Because the *First Brethren Court* feared her.
Calypso, goddess of the sea, moody and capricious. One day she’d love the pirates and give them wind; the next she’d get angry and drown them all.
So the Brethren Court made a deal with *Davy Jones*, her lover: “Teach us how to trap a goddess.”
With a broken heart because she betrayed him, he showed them the ritual. They imprisoned her in an ordinary human body, and she became _Tia Dalma_.
The result? The sea was left without a mistress… and Davy Jones was cursed and turned into a monster for abandoning his duty.
*In short:* They caged her so they could rule the sea themselves, without a goddess messing with their fate.
---
*Her Relationship with Jack Sparrow?*
Jack was the smartest of them all, but even he couldn’t tame her.
1. *In the Past:* Jack was one of the Brethren Court who imprisoned her. He handed over his “Piece of Eight” so the ritual could be completed. Meaning he helped cage her with his own hands.
2. *When She Was Tia Dalma:* He’d go to her for her magic. She gave him the compass, and she brought Hector Barbossa back from the dead. It was all transactional 😎
3. *When She Was Freed:* He tried to convince her to side with him against the East India Trading Company. But the moment she was free, she screamed _“I am free!”_, made the whirlpool, and let them wipe each other out. She didn’t stand with Jack or with Jones. The sea is free.
*The Coolest Thing Jack Ever Said About Her:*
“Calypso… you unpredictable, devilish, bewitching thing.”
She never loved him, and he never trusted her. But the two of them were alike: _Free, with no master._

*3 Myths from Calypso’s Family in _Pirates of the Caribbean_:*
1. *Davy Jones*
- *Origin:* He was once a normal sailor, but Calypso loved him and tasked him with ferrying the souls of those who died at sea to the afterlife.
- *The Condition:* He could meet her once every 10 years on land. Just one day.
- *The Betrayal:* She didn’t show up for the appointment. 10 years passed and she was gone. His heart broke, so he cut it out and locked it in a chest.
- *The Curse:* For failing his duty, he and his crew transformed into sea-monster hybrids. And the ship, _the Flying Dutchman_, became cursed.
- *Philosophy:* When love turns to vengeance… it drowns you before it drowns your enemy.
2. *The Kraken*
- *What It Is:* Calypso’s pet beast. A giant octopus/squid as big as 10 ships.
- *Its Job:* Davy Jones’s right hand. If Jones marked a ship with the Black Spot… the Kraken would come down and devour it.
- *Its End:* Jones killed it himself on orders from the East India Trading Company. That’s why we find its corpse on the shore in the third movie.
- *Philosophy:* Even the strongest weapon dies when its master is broken.
3. *Mermaids*
- *Not Like Disney At All:* They look beautiful to lure sailors. They sing, the men jump off the ship, and the mermaids eat them.
- *In Part 4:* Jack and Blackbeard wanted a mermaid’s tear for the Fountain of Youth.
- *The Rule:* If a mermaid cries from true love, her tear becomes magic. But they don’t have hearts capable of love.
- *Philosophy:* The most beautiful thing in the sea… is also the most dangerous.

*The Rule of the _Pirates of the Caribbean_ World:*
Any mythical creature of the sea = _Free, treacherous, and owned by no one._
